As we head into the warmer seasons, it’s important to be mindful of potential sun damage. Prevention is always the best step. But what if we’re already suffering from pas sun damage?

Sun damage over time causes damage to the skin. One of the first signs of this damage is discoloration of the skin with brown patches and spots.

Excessive sun exposure leads to varying degrees of skin pigmentation, lines and wrinkles, pre-cancerous sun-spots, thinning of the skin, loss of elasticity and skin tone. These may appear after sun damage to skin from ultraviolet light or tanning booths. They may appear at any age, usually on the hands and face. And unfortunately, these spots darken over time and may converge to form larger unattractive splotches that can be embarrassing, particularly if they are on the face.

Laser skin resurfacing with the Fraxel laser can remove years from your appearance. This procedure can tighten enlarged pores and repair sun damage, melanoma, scars and wrinkles.

Fraxel is laser energy used to treat sun damage by targeting water in the skin. When applied to the skin, Fraxel laser creates tiny microthermal zones deep into the skin. This helps the repair process by pushing out the damaged skin and replacing it with new skin. Each laser treatment replaces a specific amount of the sun damaged, scarred or wrinkled skin; and triggers the body’s natural healing process, accelerating the production of collagen and healthy skin cells.

A good candidate for this treatment is someone typically between the age of 18 to 60, with no significant medical conditions. If you have sun damage (with brown or red spots), uneven skin texture (like wrinkles and fine lines), and skin laxity (loose skin), chances are you’re a good candidate for this treatment.

The latest studies have shown that clearance rate of up to 85% can be expected after one Fraxel laser treatment. One treatment with Fraxel can be extremely successful in decreasing the number of sunspots. Treatment is very well tolerated, and on average takes only 30 minutes to perform. It is relatively painless. Healing occurs within days of treatment.

The positive effects (decrease in sun damage) of Fraxel is variable, and is dependent on genetic factors, your previous sun exposure, and your future sun exposure. Most patients will have lasting results for 3-10 years.

Fraxel is a safer alternative to more aggressive procedures used by physicians in the past and allows for a quicker healing time and less downtime.
